Near-drowning victim taken to the hospital on Maui

  • Three Maui hunters needed assistance from Makawao firefighters when they got disoriented by fog and darkness on the Waiakoa Loop Trail early this morning.

A 63-year-old woman tourist from Washington state was taken in critical condition to Maui Memorial Medical Center after rescuers pulled her from the Honolua Bay in west Maui Thursday morning.

Maui firefighters and Napili Ocean Safety rescue personnel responded  to a swimmer in distress call at 9:20 a.m.  The woman was snorkeling when someone on shore noticed her yelling for help.

Rescuers found the Mount Vernon, Wash. woman unconscious and face down in the water. She was brought to shore, where firefighters began CPR before an ambulance took her to the hospital.
