The Hawaii men’s basketball team got its first commitment of the spring on Saturday night. Negus Webster-Chan, a 6-foot-7, 200-pound ex-Missouri swingman, committed to the Rainbow Warriors while on his official visit to UH today.

The Ontario, Canada, native averaged 2.5 points and 2.0 rebounds in 15.5 minutes per game as a Tigers freshman. He played in 32 of 34 contests, starting six.

Webster-Chan must sit out the 2013-14 season, then will have three years of eligibility.

“I just felt this was the right fit for me where I could succeed better, coming to Hawaii and playing for this coaching staff,” Webster-Chan said in a phone interview.

UH coach Gib Arnold can’t comment on Webster-Chan until his paperwork is received after the start of the spring singing period Wednesday.

He shot 27.1 on 3-pointers and just over 30 percent overall from the field, albeit against one of the toughest conferences in the country, the SEC.
