Warriors earn volleyball playoff berth with 3-2 win over UCSD
Sophomore opposite Brook Sedore put down a career-high 31 kills and No. 14 Hawaii did what had appeared two weeks ago to be the impossible: It made the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation volleyball tournament.
The Warriors rallied past host UC San Diego 25-27, 26-24, 19-25, 25-21, 15-11 tonight in La Jolla, Calif. The victory, coupled with a loss by Cal State Northridge to Long Beach State earlier gave Hawaii the eighth and final berth.
Sophomore middle Taylor Averill added nine kills and was in on seven blocks for the Warriors (11-16, 10-14). Hawaii face top-ranked and top-seeded Brigham Young in a quarterfinal match next Saturday in Provo, Utah.
For the second straight night, Hawaii was without its top two hitters in freshman Siki Zarkovic (injury) and sophomore JP Marks (potential eligibility issue).
Hawaii extended its single-season record of five-setters to 13, improving to 7-6.
Vaun Lennon came off the bench for 14 kills for the Tritons (7-22, 4-20).
