Hawaii County police are investigating the theft of a solar photovoltaic system valued at more than $5,000 from MacKenzie State Park in Puna.

Police said the theft occurred between April 26 and April 28.

After climbing onto the roof of the park’s new bathrooms and removing the solar panels, thieves cut a heavy duty chain-link fence, gaining access to the control box and a water pump.

Police ask that anyone who may have witnessed the incident or who may have information on the identity of the person or persons responsible to call officer Joseph Passmore at (808) 965-2716.

Tipsters who prefer to remain anonymous may call Crime Stoppers at (808) 961-8300 in Hilo or (808) 329-8181 in Kona and may be eligible for a reward of up to $1,000.
