Convicted felon suspected in death of Waipahu infant

A 36-year-old Waipahu man, with past convictions for abuse of a family member, is being investigated in the death of a six-week-old boy.

The baby was found unresponsive at a Waipahu home around 3:30 p.m. Tuesday, a police report said.

The Medical Examiner’s Office identified the infant as Gabriel Mambrere of Waipahu.

The cause of death was pending further investigation, the Medical Examiner’s Office said.

No other details were released.

The suspect was arrested at the police station Wednesday night on suspicion of second-degree murder.

Court records show that the suspect was convicted three times for misdemeanor offenses in 2001. The suspect also has two felony convictions — for burglary in 2000 and theft in 2003.
