Hawaii joins network to improve birth outcomes

Hawaii is joining three other states in a network to reduce infant mortality rates.

State officials announced Friday Hawaii has been selected by the National Governors Association to join the network with Indiana, New Mexico and West Virginia.

Hawaii Gov. Neil Abercrombie says his administration is committed to reducing infant mortality and improving birth outcomes.

Hawaii Health Director Loretta Fuddy says goals include decreasing premature births, reducing teen pregnancy and expanding breastfeeding options. She says partnering with other states will help learn what works in other places.

The network is meant to help states develop and implement policies and initiatives meant to improve birth outcomes, measured by a reduction in preterm births and infant deaths.
