A woman was killed and three people were critically injured Tuesday in two separate crashes on Hawaii island.

In Kiholo, a woman died and a man was critically injured in a single-vehicle accident at  2:29 p.m. on the Queen  Kaahumanu Highway near Mile Marker 78. A fire official said the car had gone off the roadway into the lava field, ejecting both occupants. The woman died at the scene and a man was transported by helicopter to the North Hawaii Hospital in critical.

A head-on collision in Waimea occurred at about 6:25 p.m. Tuesday on Kawaihae Road (Highway 19) near Anekona Road near Mile Marker 63. Both drivers were in critical condition when they were transported to the North Hawaii Hospital. A fire official said one driver was in his 70s and the other was in his 20s.
