Big Isle police arrest man suspected in armed bank robbery

Hawaii island police arrested a 37-year-old Honomu man in connection with a robbery that occurred at the Hamakua Coast Community Federal Credit Union. 

The suspect turned himself in at the Kona police station at about 6 p.m. Thursday while officers conducted an islandwide search for him. He was arrested on suspicion of robbery, theft and terroristic threatening. The suspect remains in custody at the Hilo police station. 

Shortly after 1 p.m. Thursday, a masked man entered the credit union and pointed what appeared to be a handgun at two tellers, demanding cash, according to a news release by the Hawaii Police Department. He fled on foot with an undisclosed amount of money. 

The investigation on the robbery is ongoing.
