2 are indicted in theft of items worth $20,000

A Kauai grand jury has indicted two men for allegedly stealing photographic equipment and a laptop computer with a total value of $20,000 from an Anahola rental house in February.

The Garden Island newspaper reported that Aliki K. Peleketi of Anahola and Ocean K. Haire of Kapaa were indicted May 23 on first-degree theft charges. The two were arrested Feb. 11, after the Feb. 8 theft.

Police recovered the camera, including images taken at a Maui wedding a few days before the robbery, one of the photographers told the Kauai newspaper.

The newlyweds and the photographers had posted a $2,000 reward, which led to the arrests, one of the photographers said.

Repairs to close Maui boat ramp for 2 months

State and Maui County officials say West Maui’s only boat launch ramp will be closed two months for repairs.

The Maui News reported that the concrete ramp and two loading docks have degraded and that replacing them will cost $892,000.

Officials met Tuesday with commercial operators and fishermen to discuss when to close the ramp.

Department of Land and Natural Resources boating engineer Eric Yuasa said he can’t guarantee that the facility can continue operating for another six months or even two months.

State officials originally scheduled repairs for January and February. Some users said they prefer a shutdown in October and November.

Yuasa said state officials and a contractor will discuss timelines. Another public meeting on the ramp is tentatively set for June 18.
