Ex-prison guard to be sentenced for sex abuse

A former correctional officer is being sentenced for having sex with a female inmate at Honolulu’s federal detention center.

Richard Seaman is expected to be sentenced today in federal court. He pleaded guilty last year to one count of sexual abuse of a ward. In exchange for his guilty plea, prosecutors have agreed to dismiss the remaining four counts.

According to the plea agreement, Seaman had sex with an inmate while supervising female inmates working in the commissary. FBI agents arrested him at the detention center after the woman saved his DNA on her shirt and turned it in to investigators.

Defense attorney William Harrison says Seaman resigned from his job after he was arrested.

Seaman faces a sentence of up to 15 years in prison and a $250,000 fine.
