18 Hawaii island emergency sirens fail to activate in test
Hawaii County Civil Defense officials Tuesday said the monthly emergency warning siren test conducted Monday showed that 18 of the 71 emergency sirens failed to activate or emit sounds.
Those sirens were primarily in the Hilo and Puna areas.
Technicians from the Hawaii Police Department Radio Shop were dispatched to trouble shoot a radio transmission repeater site in the Kulani area which provides for the radio signal communications link for those sirens, Civil Defense officials said. Corrective actions were taken and preliminary tests conducted to confirm system function and operability.
A follow up siren test will be conducted and the public informed in advance of the test.
