Maui firefighters mop up hot spots in Kaupo brush fire flare-up

Maui firefighters Tuesday mopped up hot spots after containing the Kaupo brush fire that flared up again on Maui Monday destroying an additional 25 acres but was fully contained Tuesday.

Maui fire officials said the fire broke out at about 3 p.m. Monday but fire crews fully contained Tuesday.

Fire crews along with two helicopters Tuesday concentrated on mopping up within the 25-acre burn. Crews have been released but will return Wednesday to continue mop up. One crew will remain to do periodic checks on the fire ground.

Over the weekend more than 65 acres of brush were scorched on the Ulupalakua side of Manawainui Gulch in Kaupo.

The fire was first reported shortly after 3 p.m. Saturday. Firefighters battled the blaze all weekend and it was finally reported extinguished at 6:30 a.m. Monday.

Fire officials believe the weekend fire may have been intentionally set because firework remnants were found at the scene. Remains of a type of fireworks known as Ground Bloom Flowers were recovered Sunday.
