A 54-year-old man who drowned in waters off Lydgate Beach Park last week was identified as Hom Shu, of Seattle, Wash., a Kauai County spokeswoman said.

Shu had been swimming in Morgan’s Ponds when he was found under water shortly before 7 p.m. on Thursday.

Paramedics took Shu to Wilcox Hospital in critical condition. He died Friday night.

This is Kauai’s fourteenth drowning so far this year. Many of the drownings have involved tourists.

There were eight drownings last year on Kauai.

In response to the increase in drownings on Kauai, officials began showing a water safety video in the baggage claim area of the Lihue Airport.
