A 21-year-old man who went into a downtown convenience store and allegedly tried to take a can of beer assaulted the cashier after he was caught, police said.

The man tried to hide a beer can in his pocket, but was noticed by the cashier at about 1:25 a.m. Tuesday, police said.

He went up to the cashier with another can, but when asked about the hidden beer can, the suspect allegedly assaulted the cashier and fled with both beer cans without paying for them, police said.

Officers located the suspect and arrested him on suspicion of robbery.
