The Maui Fire Department's Air-1 rescue helicopter this morning located a father and son who went missing while hiking in Iao Valley Friday afternoon.

Rescuers on Maui located this morning a lost father and son who went missing in Iao Valley Friday. Firefighters had to suspend the search Friday night because of heavy rains and darkness.

The rescue resumed at 6 a.m. and the Fire Department helicopter located the pair at 6:50 a.m. about a mile and a half into the trail and airlifted them to a landing zone.

The hikers said they were “very cold,” but reported no injuries.

A Fire Department spokesman said a 51-year-old man, from Fort Worth, Texas, set off on a hike with his 11-year-old son at 1:30 p.m. to find a pond they had heard about.

The man’s wife waited for them in the parking lot and reported them missing at about 6:30 p.m., when they failed to return.

The pair had personal floatation devices, but no cell phone or flashlights, firefighters said.

The Air-1 helicopter attempted to fly over the area, but turned around because of poor weather and darkness Friday night. Firefighters hiked in, but suspended the search because of the wet weather at about 8:20 p.m.
