San Diego tops UTEP to open Wahine volleyball tournament
Katie Hoekman put down 18 kills and Alaysia Brown 14 as San Diego pulled out a 25-14, 22-25, 25-23, 25-20 victory over UTEP in tonight’s opening match of the Chevron Rainbow Wahine Invitational at the Stan Sheriff Center.
Chloe Ferrari and Sandra Lozic each had 10 kills in the balanced attack for the Toreros. Hawaii Baptist product C’era Oliveira, USD’s senior libero, had 26 digs and junior reserve setter Jianna Bonomi, the daughter of former Hawaii All-American Carlos Briceno, finished with a team-high 29 assists.
For UTEP, senior setter Malia Patterson, a Punahou product, had a match-high 34 assists. Senior middle Xitlali Herrera led the Miners with 15 kills.
It was the season-opener for both teams.
In tonight’s second match, No. 11 Hawaii hosted No. 1 Texas, the defending NCAA champion.
