Strong earthquake hits northern Philippines; no tsunami threat to Hawaii

MANILA » Government seismologists say a moderately strong earthquake has jolted the northern tip of the Philippines, but no damage or injuries have been reported.

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology said the earthquake measured magnitude 6.0 and struck late today (1:33 a.m. Hawaii time) about 26 miles southeast of Uyugan township in the northernmost province of Batanes. It said it was centered at a depth of 114 miles.

The institute recorded at least one aftershock.

Ivy Aria of the Office of Civil Defense said no damage or injuries have been reported.

The Philippine archipelago is located in the Pacific "Ring of Fire," where earthquakes and volcanic activity are common.
