A 45-year-old man diving off a Maui beach was attacked by a shark Wednesday afternoon, sustaining non-life-threatening injuries.
Responding firefighters found the man already on shore at Waiehu Beach with several one-inch lacerations to his lower back, Maui Fire Department spokesman Chief Lee Mainaga said.
The man had been swimming about 100 yards off shore when he encountered the shark shortly before 4 p.m.
Medics treated the man at the beach, but he drove himself to the hospital for follow-up treatment, Mainaga said.
Ocean Safety lifeguards cleared the bay and checked the area.
Department of Land and Natural Resources personnel are also investigating.
