Freshmen Brittany Hitchcock and Heather Morales turned in impressive pitching performances for the University of Hawaii softball team in exhibition wins over Chaminade and BYU-Hawaii tonight in the Kama’aina Classic at Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium.

Hitchcock held Chaminade to one hit with five strikeouts over five innings in UH’s 15-2 win over the Silverswords in today’s first game.

Morales also gave up one hit and struck out 11 in a 4-2 win over BYUH in the third game of the night. Sophomore Loie Kesterson closed out both games.

Morales contributed to the UH offense with home runs in both games. Her two-run shot in the second inning of the nightcap erased BYUH’s 1-0 lead. Dori Ann Sugai followed with a home run to center field and Morales retired the final 16 batters she faced.

In the first game, Kayla Wartner hit two homers and drove in four runs against Chaminade. Sharla Kliebenstein contributed a three-run homer in UH’s seven-run first inning.

In the second game, Chaminade’s Ashley Phelps delivered a tie-breaking RBI single in the top of the seventh and the Silverswords defeated BYU-Hawaii 4-2.

The tournament continues with three games Saturday. UH faces Chaminade at noon. The Silverswords play BYUH at 2 p.m. UH and BYUH meet at 4 p.m.
