U.S. Army and Federal Fire Department crews continued to fight a brushfire this evening at a Schofield Barracks training range with ground and aerial assets, the Army said.

An estimated 30 acres have burned. There is no threat to nearby facilities or people, the Army said.

Two UH-60 Black Hawks, one CH-47 Chinook, and two Army-contracted helicopters are responding to the fire with water bucket drops.

Army fire personnel are moving into ground accessible areas on foot and using three All-Terrain Vehicles. The Federal Fire Department is assisting with one engine, a tanker, and a brush truck.

Soldiers were conducting “indirect fire” training into the Schofield Barracks impact area at the time of the fire today, U.S. Army Garrison Hawaii said.

Although officials did not specify what type of training, indirect fire includes artillery and mortars.

An October fire at a range that burned 450 acres of brushland in the mountains above Schofield was due to ordnance detonation, the Army said.
