BEIRUT >> Beirut families of the victims in the Iranian embassy bombings say they want the suspect detained in the case, a Saudi national, to stand trial in Lebanon.

Lebanon recently announced the arrest of a man suspected of being the leader of an al-Qaida-linked group behind the bombing. Authorities said they had taken his DNA samples to crosscheck against family members in Saudi Arabia to confirm his identity.

The detained man is believed to be Majid al-Majid, the commander of the Abdullah Azzam Brigades. The group had claimed responsibility for the Nov. 19 embassy bombings that killed at least 23 people and wounded dozens.

The families of the victims said in a statement issued on Friday that “this Saudi criminal should be tried in Lebanon where he committed his grisly crimes.”
