Wind advisory covers 2 islands; weekend thunderstorms possible
Two islands are under a wind advisory today as the overnight blustery conditions continue to cool the state.
The National Weather Service has issued a wind advisory for Lanai and Hawaii island until 4 p.m. today, predicting northeast winds from 25 to 40 mph, with gusts up to 50 mph.
The weather service warns that winds this strong can make driving difficult, especially for high profile vehicles.
The wind advisory is in effect for parts of Lanai, including Lanai City and Manele; Haleakala above 6,000 feet on Maui; South Kona, North and East Kohala, Kailua-Kona, Milolii, South Point, Pahala, Hilo, Volcano, Honokaa, Kamuela, Waikoloa, Bradshaw Field and Saddle Road above 5,000 feet.
Haleakala could see 45 mph winds with 60 mph gusts.
Those winds are also generating a tradewind swell on eastern shores of Kauai, Oahu, Molokai, Maui and Hawaii island, where a high surf advisory is in effect until 6 a.m. Thursday.
