Hawaii sweeps Ohio State in volleyball
Junior opposite Brook Sedore put down a match-high 11 kills with three aces, and sophomore hitter Siki Zarkovic added nine kills and two aces as No. 14 Hawaii opened up the 20th Outrigger Hotels Volleyball Invitational with a 25-22, 25-21, 25-21 sweep of No. 12 Ohio State tonight in 98 minutes at the Stan Sheriff Center.
The Warriors (1-0, 1-0 OHVI) will face No. 11 Penn State (0-1, 0-1) in Friday’s second match at 7 p.m. The Nittany Lions were outblocked 15.5-4.5 by No. 7 UCLA when falling 25-15, 22-25, 23-25, 25-21 in today’s opener in 2 hours and 8 minutes.
The Bruins (1-1, 1-0) take on the Buckeyes (0-1, 0-1) in Friday’s 4 p.m. match.
Hawaii’s two middles — senior Nick West and junior Taylor Averill — combined for 16 kills with just two errors each. The Warriors countered a poor serving night (14errors) with six aces.
Driss Guessous and Andrew Lutz each had eight kills for Ohio State, which outblocked Hawaii 7.5-3.
The Warriors out-dug the Buckeyes 22-13.

UCLA 3, Penn State 2: Robart Page put down a match-high 23 kills and Spencer Rowe was in on seven blocks for the Bruins. Gonzalo Quiroga added 11 kills and Mitch Stahl had 11 kills and four aces — all in Set 1.
For the Nittany Lions, Aaron Russell put down 19 kills, Nick Goodell 13 and Peter Russel 12.
Set 5 was tied 10 times, the last at 14-14, on UCLA’s 21st service errors. The Bruins used two consecutive blocks to close it out.
