Hawaii upsets Long Beach State in 5 sets
Junior opposite Brook Sedore put down a season-high 24 kills and junior middle Taylor Averill added a season-high 14 as No. 10 Hawaii upset No. 4 Long Beach State tonight 25-23, 19-25, 19-25, 27-25, 15-8 in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation volleyball match at the Stan Sheriff Center.
Sophomore hitter Siki Zarkovic added 11 kills for the Rainbow Warriors (3-2, 1-1) who snapped a five-match losing skid against the 49ers (3-2, 2-2).
Senior hitter Taylor Crabb had 22 kills to lead Long Beach State and senior hitter Dalton Ammerman added 11.
It was the first five-setter for both teams and it lasted 2 hours and 42 minutes.
The Rainbow Warriors had 50 digs, led by sophomore libero Kolby Kanetake’s career-high 15. Sedore completed a double-double with a career-high 11 and senior setter Joby Ramos had 10 digs to go with 51 assists.
Hawaii tied the match at 2-2 when taking Set 4, a set that saw 18 ties and five lead changes. The Rainbow Warriors needed three set points to pull it out, ending it on a service error and hitting error by the 49ers.

Set 5 was equally tight early with five ties, the last at 6. At 8-7, Hawaii used a 4-0 run to pull away for good, with a kill by Averill, a solo block by junior middle Davis Holt and two Long Beach errors.
At 12-8, the Rainbow Warriors finished it out on kills by Holt and Zarkovic and a block of Ammerman by Holt and Zarkovic.
