A man who had been wanted since 2008 in the sexual assault of a minor has been arrested on Hawaii island.

Mauro Martin Ortiz, 33, formerly of Puna, was brought back to Hilo from Mexico by U.S. Marshals and was arrested and charged Thursday on a bench warrant accusing him of kidnapping, seven counts of first-degree sexual assault and five counts of third-degree sexual assault. His bail was set at $1 million.

The sexual assault occurred on June 21, 2008 in the Hawaiian Paradise Park subdivision in Puna.

A grand jury indicted Ortiz on July 10, but police were unable to locate him.

Police appealed to the public for help in finding Ortiz, and he was also featured for five months on the public television show “Hawaii Island’s Most Wanted.”
