Damage to Palolo house fire estimated at $115,000

The cause of a Palolo house fire Saturday morning is still under investigation, but fire investigators say it caused about $115,000 in damages.

The fire was reported at 6:59 a.m. at 1441 Palolo Avenue. Firefighters arrived at 7:03 a.m. and had the fire under control at 7:21 a.m. The fire was extinguished at 7:54 a.m., according to Fire Capt. Terry Seelig.

The first floor of the house has two, one bedroom apartments and three occupants.  The second floor is occupied by ten people. A separate one-story apartment is attached behind the house, with five people. All escaped without injury.

The cause is under investigation, but fire officials said the unit of origin was on the bottom floor.

When firefighters arrived, there was heavy smoke and flames coming from the first floor.  The flames were beginning to extend to exterior of second floor.

Damage is estimated at $100,000 to the structure and $15,000 to its contents, Seelig said.

The first floor suffered heavy damage, he said. There was moderate exterior damage to the second floor but no interior damage. There was no damage to the attached unit in the back.

It’s unknown if there were any working smoke detectors in the first floor.
