Engine fire causes $24,500 in damages to Hilo house

Hawaii County Fire Department officials are investigating the cause of an engine fire Saturday night that resulted in $24,500 in damages.

Firefighters responded to a garage fire at 272 Kaiulani Street in Hilo at 9:30 p.m.  When they arrived, they found the engine of a 2010 Jeep on fire and the flames were spreading to the walls and ceiling of the garage.

The fire was under control at 9:44 p.m. and extinguished at 9:50 p.m.

The single occupant of the house escaped with no injuries.
