NEW YORK » Thunderstorms are delaying flights and wreaking havoc on Memorial Day travel at the New York City area’s three major airports.

The FAA says storms Friday night are keeping flights headed for La Guardia and Kennedy in the air an extra hour or more. Newark-bound flights are also delayed.

Departures are delayed an hour or more at Kennedy and delayed up to an hour and 45 minutes at Newark. La Guardia also reported delays.

FlightAware reports 174 cancelled and 886 delayed arrivals and departures as of 9 p.m.

Fierce storms rolled through the area starting around 7:30 p.m. They were forecast to continue throughout the night.

The National Weather Service says a flash flood warning is in effect until 10:30 p.m. for Manhattan and parts of Northern New Jersey.
