Kailua-Kona pier, Keauhou harbor to get repairs

KAILUA-KONA, Hawaii >> Repairs are beginning at West Hawaii boating facilities damaged by tsunami from the magnitude-9 earthquake that struck off northern Japan in 2011.

The Department of Land and Natural Resources said Thursday the Kailua-Kona pier area will be paved. Repairs will be made to some revetment walls, a pump out station and the old U.S. Coast Guard office.

The repairs will cost $1.6 million. Parts of the pier will be blocked during construction.

At Keauhou Small Boat Harbor, repairs include work on the bulkhead on the northern side of the bay and the makai loading dock at the launch ramp area. The work will cost more than $400,000.

The state Legislature appropriated the funds in 2011. The Federal Emergency Management Agency will reimburse up to three-quarters of the cost.
