The owner of a kayak found adrift Sunday has been found safe on Kauai.

The Coast Guard said he never was in distress.

Earlier, Coast Guard officials in Honolulu got word from the charter boat Holo Holo that crewmen had seen an unmanned, yellow 15-foot kayak adrift about 7 miles off Barking Sands.

The two-person, inflatable kayak was labeled Pacific Extreme and had a red life jacket aboard.

There was no one visible in the water.

An MH-65 Dolphin helicopter crew from Barbers Point was launched to the scene to search for anyone in distress.

The Coast Guard advises the public to label all watercraft and equipment with contact information in order to quickly account for owners and prevent any unnecessary searches.

Through the Operation Paddle Smart program, the Coast Guard offers a free “If Found” decal to be placed in a visible location on watercraft.  The information on the sticker can allow first responders to quickly identify the vessel’s owner and aid search and rescue planners in determining the best course of action.

The stickers can be obtained for free at local harbormasters and at select marine retail and supply stores.
