Maui police identify diver found off Kapalua
Maui police have identified the body of a diver found in waters off Kapalua as Christopher Kuwada, 43 of Waikapu.
Police, medics, firefighters, lifeguards and the Coast Guard responded to the 12:02 p.m. report of a missing diver in the area of D.T. Fleming Beach Park.
Boaters aboard Teralani III Catamaran found a mask, snorkel and spear about half a mile offshore, but did not see a diver in the area so they called for emergency personnel.
Ocean Safety deployed its rescue watercraft.
Kuwada’s body was found floating face down by Air 1 about a mile offshore from the beach park.
Lifeguards, using the rescue watercraft, brought the diver to shore, a fire official said in an email.
