  • 2007 July 19 CTY - During a press conference on Friday Randy Honebrink

A prominent Hawaii shark expert is being sentenced for possessing child pornography.

Randy Honebrink is scheduled to be sentenced Thursday in federal court in Honolulu. Honebrink was an educational coordinator for the state Department of Land and Natural Resources who was often interviewed by the media when there’s a shark attack.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Darren Ching says Honebrink in a plea agreement admits to possessing the images.

Defense attorney William Harrison says the two photographs involved are of two people younger than 18 in sexually explicit poses.

When Honebrink pleaded guilty in January, the DLNR said he would remain employed at the agency until the court case is resolved.

Honebrink faces a sentence of up to 10 years in prison.
