A 19-year-old California man was killed when his car drove off a cliff and fell 60 feet into the water near DT Fleming Beach in Lahaina Thursday.

The car had flipped over and was found into the shorebreak at the bottom of the cliff at about 6:10 p.m. Thursday, police said.

Lifeguards and firefighters found the victim dead in the 2014 Nissan sedan and removed his body.

Police identified the victim as Martin Castro Jr., of Napa, Calif.

His car went off the Hoopiilani Highway, up an embankment and over the cliff, police said.

Speed is suspected as a factor in the crash. It’s unknown if drugs or alcohol was involved.

The death is Maui County’s 17th of the year, compared to 11 at the same time last year.
