WAILUKU >> The state Board of Land and Natural Resources has approved new fishing regulations for waters around Maui.
The Maui News reports the governor must sign the rules before they take effect.
The rules prohibit taking any large male blue parrotfish (uhu eleele and uhu uliuli.) Each fisherman may also only take two of the other varieties of uhu in a day.
Female uhu palakaluka and uhu ahuula must be at least 14 inches. That’s a 2-inch increase from previous rules. All other uhu species must be at least 10 inches, or 2 inches shorter than before.
For goatfish, fishermen may catch only one kumu per person per day and no more than two each of moano kea and munu. All goatfish need to be at least 12 inches.
