State fines circus for illegal structures

HILO >> The state Board of Land and Natural Resources has fined a nonprofit organization more than $50,000 for removing protected trees and building illegal structures on state land near Pahoa on the Big Island.

The Hawaii Tribune-Herald reports the board on Friday approved a $53,743 fine for the Village Green Society and Hawaii’s Volcano Circus.

An investigation found structures on land next to Village Green Society’s Bellyacres community in Kalapana Seaview Estates.

The circus operates the Seaview Performing Arts Center for Education on Village Green Society property.

The organizations were ordered to remove eight cabins and a horse corral within 90 days on adjacent state land.

Hawaii’s Volcano Circus chairman Graham Ellis says the group didn’t build the illegal structures and doesn’t have the money to pay a fine.
