Kilauea lava flow continues advance
An aerial assessment Saturday morning reports that the June 27 Kilauea lava flow has advanced 50 yards since Friday, Hawaii County Civil Defense said.
The Hawaiian Volcano Observatory said that the leading edge of the flow is 1.2 miles upslope from Apaa St. and 1.9 mils from Pahoa Village Road. It is approximately 10.4 miles in a straight line distance from the vent.
Surface flows remain active upslope with continued scattered breakouts where the lava first entered the crack system about 5 miles behind the flow front, scientists said.
A narrow finger at the flow front is moving along the tree line and the burning activity with that is producing a significant amount of smoke. There is no brush fire threat at this time and the burning is limited to the edges of the flow only, Civil Defense said.
