Firefighters contain 293-acre brush fire caused by lava flow

Hawaii island firefighters contained a 293-acre brush fire burning at the front of the June 27 Kilauea lava flow on Monday.

An initial aerial assessment showed the fire heading in a north-northwest direction from the head of the active flow on the west side of Highway 130 between Pahoa and Ainaloa.

Working through the afternoon, firefighters were able to contain to fire to within an existing fire break.

At one point, the fire jumped the break and continued for approximately 100 yards in a westerly direction. The breakout was extinguished by ground crews and aerial water drops.

The area involved is composed mostly of low-lying grass, uluhe ferns and ohia trees. No homes or property are threatened, but smoke conditions may increase to the north in Ainaloa and Hawaiian Paradise Park, the county said.

Aerial drops were suspended Monday evening but firefighters remained on scene to patrol the area and monitor the fire. Another aerial survey is scheduled for first light on Tuesday morning.
