Maui the demigod, a young navigator named Moana and the world of ancient Oceania will be the focus of a new animated feature from Walt Disney Animation Studios, according to a release from the studio Monday.

"Moana" will be a sweeping comedy-adventure about "a spirited teenager on an impossible mission to fulfill her ancestors’ quest," the studio said.

The story takes place in the ancient South Pacific world of Oceania where Moana sets sail for a fabled island. During her journey, she teams up with Maui — her hero — and together they encounter "enormous sea creatures, breathtaking underworlds and ancient folklore."

It’s expected to be in theaters in late 2016.

Veteran filmmakers Ron Clements and John Musker, who created "The Little Mermaid," "The Princess and the Frog" and "Aladdin," will lead the project.

"John and I have partnered on so many films — from ‘The Little Mermaid’ to ‘Aladdin’ to ‘The Princess and the Frog,’" said Clements. "Creating ‘Moana’ is one of the great thrills of our career. It’s a big adventure set in this beautiful world of Oceania."
