Rain breaks records in Honolulu and Hilo

NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE
This image shows radar estimated rainfall from Friday through Sunday night. The band of white southwest of Oahu is estimated rainfall over 15 inches, with a maximum over 30 inches. Oahu received widespread 5-7 inches of rain with localized areas up to 11 inches. However, if Hurricane Ana had tracked only 20 miles farther northeast, the Oahu rainfall would have more than doubled.

Rain from Hurricane Ana soaked the Big Island and Oahu, setting new records for rainfall in Honolulu and Hilo.

The National Weather Service said between Friday and Sunday night, about 11.7 inches fell on Keaumo in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. On Oahu, more than 11 inches was recorded at the Lyon Arboretum in Manoa.

Sunday’s rainfall at the Honolulu Airport also set a new record for the date.  The National Weather Service said 3.4 inches fell Sunday at the airport, breaking the old record of 1.86 inches set in1999.

Other areas getting heavy rain on the Big Island included the Kulani National Wildlife Reserve with 8.6 inches; Kapapala Ranch, which got nearly 7.7 inches; and the Hilo Airport, which recorded 5.3 inches.

The rain at Hilo Airport set a new record on Saturday of 4.55 inches of rain for the date. The old record of 2.08 inches was set in 1990.

On Oahu, Poamoho got 7.5 inches; Moanalua recorded 6.9 inches and 6.7 inches fell on the Waihee pump station. The Kula Forest on Maui got a little more than 3.5 inches, Puu Alii on Molokai and Kahoolawe recorded 3.2 inches.

Kauai, which was getting more rain Sunday night and Monday, saw 6 inches at Mout Waialeale; 4.9 inches at Kilohana and 3.8 inches at the Wailua Ditch.
