A strong earthquake off of Papua New Guinea does not pose a tsunami threat to Hawaii, according to officials at the Pacific Tsunami Center.

The preliminary magnitude 6.4 quake struck 44 miles north-northeast of Finschhafen, Papua New Guinea at at a depth of 32 miles at 5:33 p.m. Hawaii time, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

No injuries were immediately reported.
