Eight rescued from ocean current off Kaanapali
Maui fire rescue personnel assisted eight people swept away by a strong current in waters off Kaanapali on Friday afternoon.
According to the Maui Fire Department, a couple from Canada called for help while snorkeling at Black Rock. A family of four and another nearby couple swam over to help but found themselves also unable to deal with the strong northernly current, which swept all eight people around a corner and out of sight.
Nearby stand-up paddlers helped to bring in some of the distressed swimmers. Ocean Safety personnel brought in the rest using rescue watercraft.
No serious injuries were reported.
