Hawaii knocks off Nebraska in Diamond Head Classic

Garrett Nevels hit the go-ahead 3-pointer with 3:10 remaining and Hawaii advanced to the semifinals of the Hawaiian Airlines Diamond Head Classic for the first time since 2009 with an intense 66-58 win over Nebraska on Monday night at the Stan Sheriff Center.

The Rainbow Warriors (9-3) will play No. 11 Wichita State (9-1) on Tuesday at 4 p.m.

Aaron Valdes led a balanced scoring attack with 15 points and Garrett Nevels and Isaac Fleming each added 10.

Nebraska erased an 11-point halftime deficit and took its largest lead at 43-40 on Benny Parker’s jumper with 12:23 remaining.

UH answered with two steals that led to Valdes dunks and Valdes threw down another alley-oop dunk for a five-point lead that caused an eruption from a crowd of 6,290.

Nebraska leading scorer Terran Petteway led the Cornhuskers with 14 points but was in foul trouble most of the game. Nebraska trailed by six when he was fouled on a driving layup with 1:37 remaining, but Petteway missed the ensuing free throw.

UH held Petteway and Shavon Shields, UN’s other best player, a combined 26 points on 7-for-23 shooting from the field.

Nebraska finished 13-for-23 (56.5 percent) from the line and was outscored 20-3 in the first half with Petteway on the bench.

UH closed the first half on an 11-2 run after Petteway picked up his third foul when he was whistled for a double technical with Hawaii’s Isaac Fleming.

The ‘Bows led 34-23 at the break despite shooting 2-for-11 from deep. Nebraska owned a 23-20 edge on the glass but turned the ball over 11 times.

Forward Stefan Jankovic made his UH debut after he was cleared academically earlier in the day and had five points and three rebounds on 2-for-8 shooting.

Nebraska sophomore Tai Webster, the son of former UH player Tony Webster, went scoreless in 16 minutes off the bench and had three turnovers.
