Brrr… Cold temps set records Sunday
Temperatures in Hawaii dropped into the 50s, setting records on three islands and tying a record in Honolulu Sunday morning.
The low of 54 degrees in Lihue and Kahului broke records for Kauai and Maui. The previous record of 59 degrees in Lihue was set in 2005. The low in Kahului broke a record of 55 set for this date in 1971.
In Hilo, the low temperature of 59 degrees broke the previous record of 60 set in 1999 on Sunday’s date.
Honolulu tied a record low of 58 degrees set in 1979. Keep the extra blankets and sweaters out.
Temperatures dropped into the 50s and low 60s again overnight.
Blame the chilly conditions on north winds and cold, dry air behind the cold front that swept through the islands Friday night and Saturday.

“We’re in the middle of the ocean, we don’t normally see conditions typically this dry,” said Robert Ballard, science and operations officer for the Honolulu office of the National Weather Service. “Low humidity allows temperatures to drop quickly.”
More than 6 inches of snow remained on the ground at the summits of Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa Sunday. Ice also closed the road to the summit of Haleakala on Maui.
The forecast for Honolulu and south shores of Oahu calls for a cool high of about 77 degrees Monday, sunny skies and trade winds of about 10 mph, with gusts of 25 mph.
Monday night should bring more chilly weather with dry conditions, clear skies, lows in the 50s and 60s and cold north winds of about 10 mph.
