Waves larger than expected; high surf advisory extended
With waves of 16 to 22 feet expected to roll in tonight, officials at the National Weather Service extended a high surf advisory for the north-facing shores of all islands.
The advisory, originally set to expire at 6 a.m. Thursday, was extended 12 hours. Forecasters expect surf to peak Wednesday night, easing to the 12- to 16-foot range Thursday.
Officials warned beachgoers that the large surf at affected beaches could make entering the water very dangerous. "Anyone entering the water could face significant injury or death," officials said.
