Hawaii again upsets UC Santa Barbara in volleyball
Junior hitter Siki Zarkovic put down a match-high 17 kills to lead a balanced attack as No. 9 Hawaii upset No. 3 UC Santa Barbara for a second straight Mountain Pacific Sports Federation volleyball match.
Sophomore hitter Kupono Fey added a career-high 14 kills and senior opposite Brook Sedore had 13 kills in the 22-25, 25-23, 25-19, 25-19 victory Sunday night at the Stan Sheriff Center.
Senior middles Taylor Averill had 10 kills with just 1 error, and Davis Holt had 10 kills. It is believed to be the first time in Rainbow Warrior history that five attackers were in double figures.
Zarkovic also had a match-high 15 digs and junior libero Kolby Kanetake had 11 for the Rainbow Warriors (5-1, 2-0 MPSF). Hawaii is tied with Brigham Young atop the MPSF standings at 2-0.
Kevin Donohue led the Gauchos (4-2, 0-2) with 18 kills in the match that last 2 hours and 15 minutes.
It is the first time since 2005 that Hawaii has opened MPSF play 2-0 and also the first time since 2003 that the Rainbow Warriors have swept the two-match series with the Gauchos.
