Whale foundation boat runs aground near Lahaina Harbor

A 65-foot Pacific Whale Foundation vessel ran aground near the Lahaina Harbor channel entrance on Monday afternoon.

Lahaina firefighters and Ocean Safety personnel responding to a 3:35 p.m. emergency call found the Ocean Discovery on the north side of the harbor channel and aided the crew in securing anchor lines to prevent the vessel from drifting further to shore.

All passengers had been safely escorted off the boat prior to the first responders’ arrival.

No injuries were reported and there was no evidence of fuel leaking from the vessel.

As of Monday evening, representatives from the state Harbor Division and U.S. Coast Guard were coordinating salvage operations.
