A former prison guard is being sentenced for taking bribes from a Hawaii gang to smuggle drugs and cigarettes to inmates.

Feso Malufau is scheduled to be sentenced Wednesday. Last year, jurors found the former Halawa Correctional Facility guard guilty of a conspiracy charge involving taking bribes from the “USO Family” prison gang.

Malufau was one of 18 indicted on racketeering charges. He was one of two who didn’t plead guilty and went to trial. His co-defendant during last year’s trial was a Halawa inmate jurors found guilty of leading a brutal attack on another inmate to maintain his position as an USO.

The trial provided an inside look at the gang’s operations.

Malufau’s attorney Barry Edwards said the gang preyed on the former guard’s financial troubles and framed him.
