Smoke fills San Francisco BART station after spark on track

SAN FRANCISCO >> A San Francisco rail station filled with smoke Friday due to sparking from a track insulator, officials said. No injuries or damage were reported.

The smoke was reported on the platform of the Powell Street station about 8:45 a.m., and passengers experienced delays of several minutes, Bay Area Rapid Transit spokeswoman Alicia Trost said.

Passenger John Knox White said he felt his train rock as it reached the station.

“You could definitely feel it, I mean everyone looked around,” he said, adding that the station was filled with white smoke but no one panicked.

“They were definitely calm, a couple people pulled out medical masks. Some like me just decided to get off (the train),” he said.

Kyle Blake Peters was waiting for his train when he saw the flash, which he said looked and sounded like a large firecracker.

“I was looking at my phone and I looked up and I just saw a big cloud of smoke and (heard) a big boom,” he said.

Peters said he quickly headed for the exit.

“I got out of there as fast as I could,” he said.

The trains and tracks were inspected and no problems were found.

The station was ventilated but not closed.
