Two Honolulu police officers are hospitalized after being assaulted during a Waikiki traffic stop.

Honolulu news station Hawaii News Now reports one of the officers stopped two men riding bicycles shortly after 3 a.m. Friday.

Police say one man ran off while the other man threw the officer to the ground and kneed him in the head. Police say the officer still managed to use pepper spray on the man.

Police say the man who ran off returned and tackled the second officer who had arrived at the scene.

Police say one officer sustained head injuries and abrasions to his knee and elbow. The other officer had leg injuries.

The suspects were arrested and face charges including assaulting a police officer. One of the men also faces theft-related charges.
