Former Kahuku standout selected by New Orleans in second round

Hauoli Kikaha (Star-Advertiser / 2014)

Former Kahuku High and University of Washington defensive lineman Hauoli Kikaha was selected today by the New Orleans Saints in the second round of the National Football League Draft.

As the 44th overall pick and 12th selection of the second round, Kikaha fell about where draft analysts expected him to in the 2015 draft. He led the nation in sacks with 19 and tackles for loss with 25.

He was a consensus All-American, who fought through two devastating knee injuries in 2011 and 2012 to start 27 games over the final two years of his career. He managed a sack in 13 of 14 games played in 2014 to live up to the potential Huskies coaches and fans expected when he was recruited out of Raiders nation.

When the NFL Combine was held two months ago, Kikaha didn’t perform because of an illness, and didn’t exactly wow anyone with his 4.9 time in the 40 during Washington’s pro day in April. Durability will be an issue since he already has torn his ACL twice.
